And will the judge descend?
And must the dead arise,
and not a single soul escape
his all-discerning eyes?
2. How will my heart endure
the terrors of that day,
as earth and heaven, before his face,
in fear will melt away?
3. Before the trumpet sounds
and earth gives up its dead,
hear from the gospel’s saving word
what joyful news is spread!
4. Let sinners seek God’s grace,
whose wrath they cannot bear,
run to the shelter of his cross
and find salvation there.
5. So shall that curse be gone
for which the Saviour bled,
and that dread judgement day shall bring
joy to their hearts instead.
